Sarcosine CAS 107-97-1

Sarcosine is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH₃NHCH₂COOH, also known as N-methylglycine. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, with a faint characteristic odor and a sweet taste. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and practically insoluble in organic solvents such as diethyl ether and acetone. Commonly used as a surfactant intermediate in the production of mild anionic surfactants for cosmetic and personal care products (such as facial cleansers, shampoos, and body washes). Also functions as a buffering agent, a metal chelator in industrial cleaning formulations, a flavor enhancer in certain food applications, and a building block in organic synthesis. Stable under normal storage conditions and should be kept in tightly sealed containers away from moisture and strong oxidizing agents.
