Cresol CAS 84989-04-8

Meta-p-cresol is a mixture of three cresol isomers: o-, m-, and p-cresol. Its chemical formula is C₇H₈O and its molecular weight is 108.138. Its components include meta-cresol (3-cresol) and p-cresol (4-cresol). The boiling points of the two are similar (the difference is 0.4℃). It is difficult to separate them by distillation in industry and usually exists in the form of a mixture. ‌

Physical properties ‌Appearance‌: Colorless to light yellow transparent liquid, the color gradually darkens after long storage or exposure to light. ‌

‌Solubility‌: Slightly soluble in water, miscible in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and chloroform. ‌

‌Melting point‌: 8-10℃ (m-cresol) to 32-34℃ (p-cresol). ‌

‌Boiling point‌: 202-202.8℃ (mixture). ‌

Main uses ‌Mainly used in the pharmaceutical, plastic, pesticide and paint industries, and also as a developer. ‌

Production method
Obtained through coal tar fractionation, or through o-xylene sulfonation, alkali fusion, acid precipitation, distillation and other steps
