Anisole CAS 100-66-3

Anisole (English name: Anisole) is an organic compound, also known as anisole or methylphenyl ether, with the chemical formula C7H8O and a molecular weight of approximately 108.15. It is usually a colorless liquid with a pleasant and fragrant smell. Relative density 0.9956 (18℃), melting point -37.5℃, boiling point 155℃, refractive index 1.5179; Soluble in alcohol and ether, insoluble in water.
The main groups in the anisole molecule are the benzene ring and the methoxy group, which possess the chemical properties of both aromatic and ether types. It has good stability against weak oxidants, reductants, bases and dilute acids. It is unstable to concentrated and strong acids. For instance, when heated with hydroiodic acid or hydrobromic acid, the ether bond is prone to break, decomposing to form the corresponding halogenated hydrocarbons and phenols. It can be oxidized at low temperatures to produce CO, CO₂, benzene and phenol, and can undergo electrophilic substitution reactions on the aromatic ring. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be generated through pyrolysis reactions.
