The aqueous solution is alkaline and has a certain erosive effect on the skin. It is insoluble in ethanol and carbon disulfide. Trisodium phosphate is commonly used as a soft water agent and boiler cleaner in industries such as textiles, printing and dyeing, papermaking, power generation, and chemical engineering. It is also used as a rust remover for metals, a fixing agent for reactive dyes, a phosphating agent for steel containers, a sugar juice purifier, a rubber milk coagulant, and a drug culture agent such as penicillin. Trisodium phosphate can also be used as a food additive and is allowed to be used as a moisture retention agent for food according to GB2760-1996 regulations in China. It can also be used as a developer accelerator and is commonly used in oil soluble color developing solutions.
