Sodium lignosulfonate is readily soluble in water and alkaline solutions. It precipitates when exposed to acid and has a strong dispersing ability. The presence of sulfonic acid groups in its molecule significantly enhances its water solubility. Its structure is a three-dimensional network polymer formed by the connection of phenylpropyl units such as guaiacyl and lilac through C-O bonds or C-C bonds, containing functional groups such as phenolic hydroxyl and methoxy groups, which can undergo chemical reactions such as sulfonation and oxidation. ‌
