Chromium chloride, chemical formula CrCl3. Molecular weight 158.36. Dark green crystalline powder. Easy to dissolve in water, soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether. Boil with water for a long time to form a green solution. Heating decomposition. When heated in the air, it turns into chromium trioxide. Sublimation can occur in chlorine gas flow, and co heating with carbon tetrachloride at 400 ℃ can yield kinetically inert purple anhydrous material. There are three variants of hexahydrate: dark green, light green, and purple. They all turn into a mixture of dark green and purple in aqueous solution, but appear dark green in organic solvents such as DMSO, DMF, and ethanol.
