1. What is Zinc Lactate?

project

information

Chinese name

Zinc lactate

English name

Zinc lactate

Molecular formula

C₆H₁₀O₆Zn (Zn(C₃H₅O₃)₂)

molecular weight

243.53 (anhydrous), 279.56 (dihydrate)

CAS number

16039-53-5

Appearance

White powder, odorless

Solubility

Soluble in water (approximately 4.5 g/100 mL at room temperature), slightly soluble in ethanol.

Where did it come from?

Zinc lactate is produced by reacting lactic acid with zinc oxide or basic zinc carbonate. Lactic acid is a natural fermentation product (found in yogurt, pickles, and as an organic acid ubiquitous in human muscle metabolism), while zinc is an essential trace mineral for the human body. The combination of the two inherits the mild characteristics of lactic acid—lacking the pungent astringent and metallic taste of inorganic zinc salts.

2 . Complete Uses of Food-Grade Zinc Lactate

1. Zinc fortifier – primary function

Available for:

Food categories

Add purpose

Reasons for choosing zinc lactate

Infant formula milk powder

Zinc is essential for growth and development

Good taste + high absorption + white color + no calcium and iron antagonism

Infant rice cereal/complementary food

Zinc supplementation during the complementary food stage

The color and taste of the rice noodles remain unchanged.

Fortified flour and bread

Zinc supplementation in staple foods – most widely covered population

It does not interfere with gluten and fermentation.

dairy products

Milk itself is low in zinc.

Good solubility + does not affect frankincense

Beverages and functional drinks

Liquid zinc supplement

The solution is transparent, odorless, and blends well with fruit acids.

Nutritional oral liquid/zinc supplement

Concentrated zinc supplementation

Good taste + high bioavailability

Pastries, biscuits

Zinc fortification in baking

Stable at high temperatures and does not oxidize or deteriorate

Nutritional salt/seasoning

Zinc supplementation through daily seasoning

Do not introduce odors

2. Oral care – Active ingredients in toothpaste and mouthwash

Zinc lactate's use in toothpaste and mouthwash crosses the line of "food grade," but it is indeed a food-grade ingredient. Its value:

Antibacterial: Zn²⁺ inhibits the growth of oral pathogens and biofilm formation;

Anti-tartar: Chelates Ca²⁺ and PO₄³⁻ in saliva, preventing calcium phosphate crystal deposition;

Eliminate bad breath: It combines with volatile sulfur compounds to fundamentally eliminate odors, rather than masking them with mint.

Unlike sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP, the chelating anti-calculus ingredient mentioned above), zinc's mechanism of action is more focused on antibacterial and sulfide neutralization. The two are used together in some high-end toothpastes to form a dual anti-calculus and antibacterial system.

3. Blending strategy with other zinc sources

In actual food formulations, zinc lactate is often combined with other zinc sources:

Zinc lactate + zinc oxide: Zinc oxide provides high zinc content and low cost, while zinc lactate provides taste and solubility—a classic combination for dry powder supplements;

Zinc lactate + zinc gluconate: Two organic zinc compounds work synergistically, with complementary tastes, and are commonly found in high-end oral liquids;

Zinc lactate + Vitamin C: The acidity of Vitamin C is compatible with the slightly acidic environment of lactate, while Vitamin C promotes the absorption of zinc in the intestine.

4. A suitable zinc source for vegetarian and halal markets

Zinc lactate is produced by the reaction of fermented lactic acid with mineral zinc—the entire process contains no animal-derived ingredients. Unlike some calcium sources derived from animal bones or trace elements that require animal protein carriers, zinc lactate is naturally suitable for the vegetarian and halal food markets.

3 . Summary

Zinc lactate is the most "low-key" player among trace element fortifiers—consumers are almost never able to notice its presence outside the ingredient list, but its mission is no less significant than that of any grand additive:

Scene

What is it doing?

Infant formula

The first zinc you take in your life—supports cell division, immunity, and brain development

Children's zinc supplement oral solution

Slightly sour and slightly sweet – children won't cry or refuse.

Fortified bread

Hidden Zinc in Staple Foods – Making Every Bite a Zinc Supplement Opportunity

sports drinks

A transparent and odorless way to replenish zinc lost through sweat.

toothpaste

Antibacterial, anti-tartar, eliminates bad breath—it's not just about brushing clean, it's about preventing odor from developing in the first place.

Unlike calcium, which is "massive," or iron, which has "obvious symptoms," zinc deficiency is often the most insidious—loss of appetite, low immunity, and slow wound healing are signals that are often overlooked. The value of zinc lactate lies in the fact that it ensures that this "quiet essential element" is never lacking, from a baby's first bite to every day of adulthood, in the gentlest and most easily accepted way by the body.
