Basic nickel carbonate is also known as basic nickel (II) carbonate. ①NiCO3·2Ni(OH)2·4H2O=376.23 green crystal. Relative density 2.6. Dissolve in hot acid. ②2NiCO3·3Ni(OH)2·4H2O=587.67 bright green crystals or powder. Insoluble in cold water, decomposes upon contact with hot water, but soluble in acids and ammonium salts. The two basic salts are a mixture of an indefinite amount of nickel carbonate, nickel hydroxide and crystalline water. The former still needs further confirmation. It is produced by the interaction of nickel sulfate and sodium carbonate. The method of adding alkali carbonate metal salts to nickel salt water solution has a composition that varies greatly under the influence of conditions, mainly including NiCO3·2Ni(OH)2·4H2O and 2NiCO3·3Ni(OH)2·4H2O, etc.
It is generally light green and loose in block form, and there are also fine dark green shell-shaped blocks. It is insoluble in water and water containing carbon dioxide, but soluble in warm solutions of acids, ammonium carbonate, ammonium chloride, etc. Especially the compound with the composition of NiCO3·2Ni(OH)2·4H2O is well-known and is produced in nature as jadeite. Its relative density is 2.664 for the synthetic product and 2.57 to 2.69 for the mineral. Insoluble in water, soluble in ammonia water and dilute acids. It is used for electroplating, nickel production catalysts and glaze pigments, etc.
