2-ethylhexyl acetate (C10H20O2), also known as isooctyl acetate or 2-ethylhexyl acetate, is a colorless, transparent and flammable liquid with a fruity aroma and a sweet taste. Its CAS number is 103-09-3 and its customs code is 29153990 [1-3]. Its melting point is -93℃, boiling point 199℃, flash point 87.8℃. At room temperature, it is readily soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol and ether, but has a low solubility in water. This substance is of low toxicity. The oral LD50 for rats is 3000mg/kg. Under normal use, it has no obvious physiological harm, but it is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
This ester compound is mainly used as a solvent for paints, coatings and leather brighteners, and is also applied in the manufacture of fragrances. Chemically, it readily reacts with strong oxidants, acids and bases, and is prone to hydrolysis in a caustic alkali environment. Storage should be in a cool and well-ventilated place, away from fire sources, and isolated from oxidants, acids and alkalis. Safe operation requires wearing protective equipment. After contact, rinse with clean water. Fire extinguishing can be carried out using dry powder, foam or carbon dioxide. During transportation, it should be avoided to be mixed with other chemicals
